Stella Dallas
Golden Silents
Friday, February 13, 2009 at 7pm
Superb 35mm archive print!

Belle Bennett stars as an ambitious woman who marries above her station but must give up everything for the happiness of her daughter. Co-starring Ronald Colman and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. With live piano accompaniment by Stephen Horne, one of the U.K.’s leading silent film accompanists. After the screening, there will be a Meet the Artist Reception in the Furman Gallery with complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks and hor d’oeuvres.

Olive Higgins Prouty’s celebrated novel was most famously adapted for the big screen by King Vidor, in the Barbara Stanwyck weepie of 1937. But this original, classically elegant silent version is by many accounts an even greater film. Belle Bennett gives an unforgettable, heart-wrenching title performance, as an ambitious woman who marries above her station but must give up everything for the happiness of her daughter. The finale is one of the most moving sequences in cinema history.
