Circus Performers /Saltimbancii Series: Shining Through a Long, Dark Night: Romanian Cinema, Then and Now [April 16-April 27] Director: Elisabeta Bostan, Release: 1981, Runtime: 93 Circus Performers, one of the best-loved Romanian films, is the story of the Marcelloni family, a turn-of-the-century Romanian circus troupe hailed in all the capitals of Europe. The family’s notoriety is challenged by a new performer, a remarkable polar bear named Fram. Gradually, Fram takes over the act, causing tensions especially with the Marcelloni generation slated to take over the family business. Director Elisabeta Bostan previously had been known as a director of children’s films. Here, she made an extremely successful transition to more mainstream fare, applying her quiet, observational style to an interesting meditation on the changing role of the artist in society. The film was a huge popular success, and spawned a sequel, The Circus of the North Pole. Later, both films were edited together into a TV mini-series, Fram. New Print Romania/USSR
