Adela
Series: Shining Through a Long, Dark Night: Romanian Cinema, Then and Now [April 16-April 27]
Director: Mircea Veroiu, Country: Romania, Release: 1985, Runtime: 100

After a brief cultural thaw in the late 1970s, censorship in Romania again became strict in the ‘80s, and filmmakers, as so often happens, retreated to period films. An adaptation of Garabet Ibraileanu’s novel, Adela is set in the final weeks of the 19th century—at the moment of the uncertain passage from one era to another. Dr. Codrescu (George Motoi) arrives in a town he used to know well and makes the acquaintance of Adela (Marina Procopie), a winsome young divorcee who had been a child the last time he saw her. Codrescu is over 40, and although he has several chances to approach Adela with romance as an objective, he backs down each time. A poetic, visually evocative period drama, Adela charts the passing of youthful dreams—and the acceptance of a middle age with little hope for the future.
