Rosauro Castro Series: Wounded Pride, Simmering Passion: Roberto Gavaldón [Aug 22 - 28, 2008] Director: Roberto Gavaldón, Country: Mexico, Release: 1950, Runtime: 90 Rosauro Castro is a proud example of a rich tradition in Latin American film and literature, familiar to readers of Gabriel García Márquez, Roa Bastos and Mariano Azuela: the study of the corruption of absolute power. Popular Mexican star Pedro Armendáriz plays a rural political strong man, or cacique, whose days may be numbered. Though Gavaldón and Armendáriz were turned down for financing from the established film companies, they felt so strongly about the project that they produced the film themselves. The film performed poorly at the box office, although it developed a considerable cult following among critics and film buffs—before the negative was reportedly lost in a fire. Rediscovered a few years ago, we're delighted to offer this rare screening of what many critics consider to be one of Gavaldón's finest films.
