Series: Japanese Screen Classics: In Honor of Madame Kawakita [July 30 – Aug 14, 2008]
Director: Akira Kurosawa, Country: Japan, Release: 1949, Runtime: 122

Made in 1949 but not released in the U.S. until 1963 — by which time Kurosawa’s fame in the West had been firmly established — this dazzling film noir stars Toshiro Mifune as Murakami, a young Tokyo police detective who loses his gun to a pickpocket on a crowded bus. Taking the theft as a personal slight, Murakami sets out to discover the culprit by any means necessary, eventually involving his superior, Sato (Takashi Shimura), in his increasingly suspicious and obsessive hunt. Kurosawa slowly unveils the contrasts between Sato’s hard-line approach to police work and Murakami’s more conflicted humanism. He’s immeasurably aided by Fumio Hayasaka’s atmospheric score, which combines with the film’s technical wizardry — including the remarkable, eight-minute silent montage that takes a disguised Murakami into the heart of Tokyo’s criminal underworld — to create a dynamic portrait of postwar Japan.
