Elsa vows to do all she can to get the family through these hard times. But Michele has lost more than his job. A certain energy has been taken from him, and he appears increasingly helpless—soon taking a toll of their marriage. NYU-educated Silvio Soldini (Bread and Tulips, Open Roads 2001) brilliantly renders an increasingly familiar nightmare: an upper middle-class family whose comfortable lives suddenly disappear. He’s powerfully aided in creating this poignant social drama by two superb lead performances.
