The First Legion Series: Charles Boyer and The Art of Seduction [May 23 – 27] Director: Douglas Sirk, Country: USA, Release: 1951, Runtime: 86 "An anomaly in Sirk's over-the-top filmography, and well worth a look." - Time Out New York Unlike this fascinating director’s affecting weepies (Magnificent Obsession, Imitation of Life) and melodramas (Written on the Wind, Tarnished Angels), The First Legion is a subdued drama about a Jesuit priest, Marc Arnoux (Boyer), who investigates an alleged miracle in his community. The miracle revives the flagging belief of a number of other clergymen in Arnoux’s seminary. This leaves Father Arnoux, a man of intellect and reason, with the burden of undermining the new believers’ faith with his investigation. Boyer’s deeply moving portrayal is arguably one of his best. The film, unlike Sirk’s glittering studio productions, is shot in black and white with a gritty look that that adds atmosphere to the finely tuned performances.
