In the first, a sweeping tracking shot takes us into Munich at night, past the bars, cafes and occasional prostitutes. In the second, Fassbinder's Anti-Theater troupe performs a ten-minute distillation of Bruckner's Sickness of Youth. The third part is a confrontation between a newly married prostitute and her pimp (Fassbinder himself). A self-conscious panoply of clichés of gay life, It Is Not the Homosexual was denounced by the Right (not surprisingly) as well as the Left, for what was perceived as its overt sensationalism. For von Praunheim, what was most important was to force an awareness of gay life and issues into the open and onto the political agenda.
