For many admirers of Tony Richardson, as well as many of those who were close to him, The Charge of the Light Brigade remains his greatest achievement—a deeply personal response to the antiwar feeling of the period in which it was made. Set in the mid-19th century and naturally evoking Tennyson’s poem––though it was based somewhat more on Michael Curtiz’s 1936 film with Errol Flynn––Charge deals with the events that led up to the British involvement in the Crimean War.
Here, an opening animated sequence shows a helpless Turkish turkey being menaced by a Russian bear. The ruckus awakens a sleeping British lion, which strides to the rescue. From there, Richardson, working again with writer John Osborne, details the jealousies, insecurities, and just plain incompetence that led to the disastrous cavalry charge by the British Light Brigade against a Russian artillery unit at the Battle of Balaclava. Trevor Howard, Vanessa Redgrave and John Gielgud star.
