Hamlet
Series: Leading the Charge: Woodfall Film Productions and the Revolution in '60s British Cinema [July 2007]
Director: Tony Richardson, Country: United Kingdom, Release: 1969, Runtime: 117

In 1969, Tony Richardson staged a production of Hamlet at the Roundhouse, a London theater built in a former train facility and famous for its avant-garde productions. The same actors were used for both the film and the stage production, but Richardson’s Hamlet is not simply a filmed record of a live theater performance. In his previous screen adaptations of theater pieces, Richardson worked to “open out” plays, creating a counterpoint between his use of real locations and the dramatic material. In Hamlet, the process is almost the opposite; Richardson dispenses with most of the background space, creating instead an intense psychological arena for the action.

As Hamlet, Nicol Williamson gives a strikingly original performance; he’s a much more cerebral Prince, less impetuous and more given to reflection. The cast also includes Anthony Hopkins, Marianne Faithfull and Judy Parfitt.
