The Cuenca Crime / El crimen de Cuenca
Series: Spanish Cinema Now
Director: Pilar Miró, Country: Spain, Release: 1979, Runtime: 88

In 1920, two shepherds, Gregorio and Leon, are accused of killing their friend, a dim young man known as El Cepa. Egged on by the hysterical ravings of El Cepa’s family, the police arrest the two men and subject them to beatings and torture in the hope of extracting confessions. The Cuenca Crime was one of the first great cultural confrontations of post-Franco Spain; although the film was based on the historical record of an actual case, the Civil Guard sued Miró and her producers for defamation, and for two years the film’s release was held up while their case wound its way through the courts. Miró’s ultimate victory was then the surest sign that things in Spain had indeed changed. The clumsy attempt at censorship did little but whet the public’s appetite for the film, which went on to become one of the greatest commercial successes of its time.

Please note: the film contains scenes that may prove upsetting to some viewers.
