Constructing and deconstructing the eccentricities of politics and culture

Nine films look closely at the world around us.

Brilliant City (D-Fuse, UK/China, 2005; 15m) captures the everyday activities in Shanghai’s rapidly changing metropolis.

In Michael V. Smith’s Wolf Lake (Canada, 2007; 4m), in what appear to be home movies, a young woman describes an abduction.

Tim Shore’s Cabinet (UK, 2006; 18m) takes on the Unabomber story, examining the chasm between Ted Kaczynski’s rationales and violence.

We take a journey in and around a Dominican monastery designed by Le Corbusier in Let the User Speak Next (Nick Jordan, UK, 2007, 10 min).

My Own 1000 Square Metres (Atousa Bandeh Ghiasabadi, Iran/Netherlands, 2006; 13m) raises the question: can an immigrant find her cultural identity in a globalized world?

Richard O’Sullivan’s Ferndale, Western Canyon, Los Angeles (US, 2006-7; 12m) explores the contrast of “real” and “fake” within Los Angeles’ Griffith Park.

Commonwealth (David Phillips/Paul Rowley, Ireland/US, 2007; 5m) examines social progress by revisiting Yuri Gagarin and the Soviet space program of the 1960s.

In Round Eyes (Ariane Michel, France, 2006; 6m), set in the City of Lights, a denizen of the night keeps watch.

And amidst flora and fauna in We Rule (Catherine Chalmers, US, 2007; 4m), those pesky little insects are on the march––here they come…
