A showcase of art and its contents

Whether made from scratch or turning one media into another, this show is a compendium of style.

Snapping fingers and explosions of light highlight Snap (Seoungho Cho, US, 2006; 5m), a taut, minimalist work that explores digital video by pushing figure and sound towards abstraction.

Vanessa Woods’ The Touch (US, 2006; 3m) is a meditation on Anne Sexton’s poem, examining melodies within spoken and visual language.

After interviewing people during a residency in France, Woods and Sarah Friedland reinterpret their dreams using film, video, photography and animation in Breath on the Mirror (US, 2006; 9m).

Crime Scene Greenpoint (Christopher Arcella, US, 2006; 4m) is a hallucinatory document of the rubble at the Greenpoint Terminal Market, in which a major blaze broke out last year.

Michael Maziere’s latest “cine-video,” Assassin (UK, 2006; 10m), explores the seductive spectacle of crime in cinema.

Artist Tamar Hirschl and Michael Reich’s Plot (US, 2006; 8m) is a surreal look at the relationship between modern culture and the natural environment.

Gabriel Kiel’s Images (US, 2007; 19m) is a humble attempt to discover the essence of images, as a painter and the video itself create and erase those images that are just not right.

Likewise, Melanie Crean’s The Luminists (US, 2007; 10m) explores the nature of vision based on phone calls with three artists who have lost their sight but continue to make art.

And everything’s melting in The State of Things (Ligorano/Reese, US, 2006; 1m), a chronicle of the tragic fate of democracy at home and abroad in the hot air of the Bush quagmire.
