Tempest
Series: A True American Original: The Magic of Paul Mazursky [May 4 - 10 2007]
Director: Paul Mazursky, Country: USA, Release: 1982, Runtime: 140

An update of Shakespeare’s poetic drama, this version of Tempest is an exploration of male midlife crisis, Mazursky-style. Phillip Dimitrius (the irrepressible John Cassavetes), a successful New York architect, is tired of the rat race. When his wife (Gena Rowlands) walks out on him, he seizes the chance to live a simpler life. With his rebellious teenage daughter (Molly Ringwald in her second screen role) in tow, he lands on a Greek island, uninhabited except by a free-spirited divorcee (Susan Sarandon) and an eccentric shepherd (Raul Julia) living in a cave. The simple life may be elusive but marriage, Phillip learns, “is like baseball—it’s a long season.”

The scenery is gorgeous, the cast appealing and male maturity only an island away. A beautiful new 35mm print will be shown.
