Series: A True American Original: The Magic of Paul Mazursky [May 4 - 10 2007]
Director: Paul Mazursky, Country: USA, Release: 1969, Runtime: 104

This satire on permissiveness, encounter group therapy and new-age philosophy brought acclaim to Paul Mazursky and his writing partner Larry Tucker. The film was the opening night selection at the seventh New York Film Festival in 1969 and went on to enjoy a juicy box office success. In fact, it became so popular that some critics objected, assuming the film wore an air of superiority, mocking its modish characters. But Mazursky meant it as a comedy of manners, empathizing in his caustic way with its mixed-up protagonists torn between the new hedonism and the domestic status quo. Mazursky once again got exceptional performances from a stellar cast, including Natalie Wood, Robert Culp, Elliott Gould and Dyan Cannon.
