The Killers
Series: Lee Marvin: The Coolest Lethal Weapon [May 11 – 24 2007]
Director: Don Siegel, Country: USA, Release: 1964, Runtime: 95

A very loose update of Hemingway’s short story, in which the film noir ambience of Robert Siodmak’s 1946 film adaptation gives way to a detailed, violent tale of two hitmen (Marvin and Clu Gulager) in the corporate mode who operate in broad daylight. When they are hired to murder Johnny North (John Cassavetes), a teacher at an institute for the blind, the killers question why the victim behaves so passively, as if death were his proper fate. After the murder, a nasty story unfolds, including robbery and multiple betrayals, made even more interesting when the hitmen take over the investigation, trying to get to the bottom of who they killed. Marvin and Gulager are riveting as the hired guns. Angie Dickinson is the dangerously ambivalent sidekick and lover of corrupt kingpin Jack Browning, played convincingly by Ronald Reagan in his last role. Clever and brutal, this second film version of The Killers was intended for television but was released theatrically, possibly due to Siegel’s sadistic directorial flourishes.
