The Big Red One Series: Lee Marvin: The Coolest Lethal Weapon [May 11 – 24 2007] Director: Samuel Fuller, Country: USA, Release: 1980, Runtime: 158 Sam Fuller, the cinematic poet laureate of hard-boiled Americana, made The Big Red One as a labor of love, a deeply personal memoir of the most renowned U.S. infantry unit of World War II. When the film was released in 1980, it was cut drastically. Thanks to the efforts of author and critic Richard Schickel and former Warner Bros. executive Brian Jamieson, a full version of the film was finally realized, premiering at the New York Film Festival in 2004. What distinguishes the film from other war movies is its focus on ordinary non-commissioned officers, not the wildly representative ones seen in most Hollywood movies. The soldiers’ feelings of isolation are palpable even in the midst of battle, and Marvin gives the film weight and substance. Cast members Mark Hamill, Robert Carradine and Bobby Di Cicco are also excellent.
