Set during the Great Depression, Aldrich’s film spotlights the legendary hostilities between railroad men and the hobos trying to steal a free ride. Here it’s a duel to the death between Ernest Borgnine’s sadistic railroad conductor, Shack, and Marvin’s laconically contrary degenerate, who just can’t resist challenging Shack’s boast that no one has ever jumped his train and lived. Filmed in Oregon by Joseph Biroc, with a taut script by Christopher Knopf, Emperor of the North Pole’s unique story is gripping and beautifully acted by a cast that includes Keith Carradine, Matt Clark and Elisha Cook Jr. Reissued in 2006 as Emperor of the North.
