As the details accumulate and the interior spaces become familiar, a routine of alienation transforms into one family’s perception of the deadening banality of a senseless life. The writer/director states that in his story he was most interested in “the indifference in which we are walled-off from ourselves and others.” Haneke’s rigorous, formally beautiful film reveals a deep sensitivity to a sometimes invisible but real social problem.
