Enter Geremia de Geremei, the neighborhood’s friendly loan shark, who is happy to take care of all of Saverio’s needs. A well-known stage actor in Italy, Giacomo Rizzo gives a remarkable performance as Geremia, whose success at manipulating those he exploits gives a charge to every encounter he has in the film; we’re consistently stunned at how much he gets away with. As in Paolo Sorrentino’s earlier films (The Consequences of Love, One Man Up), each scene has a meticulous visual design; each space effectively identifies the character with which it’s most associated. Unsettling, at times even creepy, The Family Friend is a decidedly different kind of thriller.
