Schopenhauer Series: Open Roads: New Italian Cinema [June 6 - 14, 2007] Director: Giovanni Davide Maderna, Country: Italy, Release: 2006, Runtime: 65 One of recent Italian cinema’s most challenging filmmakers, Giovanni Davide Maderna finds sly, subtle ways of posing complex questions in strikingly dramatic terms. In Schopenhauer, two university students go to interview a famous writer who lives in a dilapidated villa in the country. Upon arriving, the writer will not receive them. Instead, they spend time with the man’s disciples, and a complicated, dangerous game begins between the new and old arrivals to the master’s lair. Arthur Schopenhauer’s The World as Will and Representation seems to be the inspiration for Maderna’s film, as the writer’s various admirers conjure up his presence through their conversations, even though he’s only upstairs, supposedly meditating.
