In Memory of Me / In Memoria di Me Series: Open Roads: New Italian Cinema [June 6 - 14, 2007] Director: Saverio Costanzo, Country: Italy, Release: 2007, Runtime: 118 After his international success Private (ND/NF 2005), Saverio Costanzo makes a second film about enclosure, this one set in the magnificent island seminary San Giorgio Maggiore near Venice. Once again, Costanzo concentrates on creating and sustaining a unique atmosphere; Andrea (Christo Jivkov) enters a seminary, where he discovers an odd, unsettling world in which the novitiates are asked not only to attend to their own spiritual development but to judge their colleagues’ suitability for the priesthood. Beautifully shot by Mario Amura, the camerawork gives a dreamlike feeling to the novitiates’ lives, stuck between material and spiritual worlds. Jivkov exudes a powerful, almost visceral energy, yet his character’s fervent desire to accede to the order is more than a match for his more natural inclinations.
