Changing Politics in Iran: Jafar Panahi's Offside with special guest Hamid Dabashi Monday, March 12: 7:00 pm Hamid Dabashi, Hagop Kevorkian Professor of Iranian Studies at Columbia University and a noted writer on Iranian cinema, will offer his views on the current state of political life in Iran, with special emphasis on recent developments and changes that have generally escaped the notice of foreign media. His talk will precede a screening of Jafar Panahi’s Offside, one of Iran’s most widely discussed recent films, which premiered at last fall’s New York Film Festival. Following the screening, Dabashi will answer questions and lead a discussion on the film. Prof. Dabashi will also sign copies of his new book, Iran: A People Interrupted (The New Press, 2007), afterward in the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery. In this book, he traces the full sweep of Iranian history over the past two centuries, with unprecedented analysis of key events, cultural trends and political developments. Destined to become the standard book on modern Iranian history, Iran: A People Interrupted is a deeply informed and eloquently written account of a national struggle for freedom and democracy against overwhelming odds. Offside Jafar Panahi, Iran, 2006; 99m Offside tells the story of a group of young women attempting to sneak into a major international soccer game. In Iran, the religious authorities have declared such soccer matches off-limits to women, due to the fear that the passion caused by the game might cause men to say or do immoral things. Yet these young women are undeterred. Dressing as boys, affecting the walks and attitudes of their male counterparts, they make their way to the stadium.
