White of the Eye Series: The Cinema of Donald Cammell [Feb 2 -11 2007] Director: Donald Cammell, Country: United Kingdom, Release: 1987, Runtime: 110 David Keith is Paul White, a happily married custom hi-fi designer who turns out to be a nice, quiet serial killer. Cammell, reviving his interest in Jack the Ripper, took Andrew Klavan’s Hitchcockian novel Mrs. White (written under the pseudonym Margaret Tracy) and created something much riskier. “The novel explored this woman's feelings as she discovers that her husband is insane, and yet she is completely dominated by him,” said Cammell. “It was more interesting to have her deeply in love, so that when she discovers he’s a serial killer, she has to make that decision to leave him or confront him and continue to love him. Even to the point where he degenerates into bestiality.” White of the Eye was shot in the Arizona desert, and it is as visually ravishing as it is behaviorally charged (“The killer has a painter's eye, which I suppose is mine,” admitted Cammell). Keith is remarkable as Paul, and Cathy Moriarty is equally remarkable as Mrs. White.
