The Priest and the Girl / O padre e a moça
Series: Tropical Analysis: The Films of Joaquim Pedro de Andrade [45th NYFF Sep 29 - Oct 9 2007]
Director: Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Country: Brazil, Release: 1965, Runtime: 90

Based on themes from a poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade (no relation), Joaquim Pedro's first feature, The Priest and the Girl, is set in Minas Gerais, a part of Brazil that shares certain qualities with the American South. Pretty and strong-willed, Mariana (Helena Ines) feels herself suffocating under the rigid conventions of small-town life. Salvation arrives in an unlikely disguise: a handsome young priest (Paulo Jose). At first Mariana's interest in him seems almost like a game. For the priest, Mariana's interest awakens something he thought was long buried under his clerical vows. De Andrade, who lived in Minas Gerais for part of his childhood, captures the hothouse atmosphere of a world in which there's little to do but make sure everyone follows the rules. The cinematography by Mario Carneiro gives the film the visual quality of book engravings.
