The Brazilwood Man / O Homen do Pau Brasil
Series: Tropical Analysis: The Films of Joaquim Pedro de Andrade [45th NYFF Sep 29 - Oct 9 2007]
Director: Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Country: Brazil, Release: 1982, Runtime: 112

The 1920s Brazilian modernista movement exerted a powerful influence on Joaquim Pedro de Andrade's artistic formation; that movement's combination of elements from the European avant-garde with a fascination with the roots of Brazilian culture can be seen in just about all of his works. De Andrade had already filmed the major modernista novel, Macunaima, so he turned to the life and work of one of its major figures, Oswald de Andrade (no relation).

The Brazilwood Man -- sadly Joaquim Pedro's final film -- is a visual and aural collage made of passages from Oswald's works, moments from the author's own life, and Joaquim Pedro's interpretations of the writer and his legacy. Oswald is played by both a man and woman. Characters from Brazil's literary and artistic past appear in various scenes, some in re-enactments of actual events. Putting these pieces together, The Brazilwood Man provides Oswald -- author of the "Cannibalist Manifesto" -- an homage that's simultaneously insightful and completely irreverent.
