Garrincha, Joy of the People / Garrincha, alegria do povo
Series: Tropical Analysis: The Films of Joaquim Pedro de Andrade [45th NYFF Sep 29 - Oct 9 2007]
Director: Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Country: Brazil, Release: 1962, Runtime: 58

Like many of his Cinema Novo compatriots, de Andrade came into the cinema through documentary. His Garrincha, Joy of the People is actually two films. One, a celebration of the legendary Brazilian soccer player Garrincha, who led Brazil to its first World Cup victories in 1958 and 1962. The other, a meditation on the role of soccer in Brazilian life - the "joy of the people." After tracing the rise and fall of Garrincha - who, after his forced retirement, was almost bankrupt - de Andrade offers some provocative thoughts on the particular obsession Brazilians have for the game, moving from psychoanalytic musings to large-scale social analogies that depict the game as a substitute for the constricting, frustrating lives of many of its fans.

Brasilia, Contradictions of a New City / Brasilia, contradições de uma cidade nova
Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Brazil, 1967; 23m

In 1966, the Italian business machine manufacturer Olivetti approached de Andrade about making a film about Brasilia, the country's futuristic capital, then only six years old. Working with film critic Jean-Claude Bernadet, de Andrade sought to uncover the Brasilia that actually existed - a gleaming, ultra-modern urban core surrounded by increasingly impoverished shantytowns. Olivetti, at first supportive of the filmmakers' approach, later decided to shelve the film. It was shown once in 1967, at a film festival in Brasilia, and then quietly deposited in the Rio Cinematheque, emerging only years later.
