His Garrincha, Joy of the People is actually two films. One, a celebration of the legendary Brazilian soccer player Garrincha, who led Brazil to its first World Cup victories in 1958 and 1962. The other, a meditation on the role of soccer in Brazilian life - the "joy of the people." Working with film critic Jean-Claude Bernadet, de Andrade sought to uncover the Brasilia that actually existed - a gleaming, ultra-modern urban core surrounded by increasingly impoverished shantytowns. Olivetti, at first supportive of the filmmakers' approach, later decided to shelve the film. It was shown once in 1967, at a film festival in Brasilia, and then quietly deposited in the Rio Cinematheque, emerging only years later.
