"Conjugal Warfare illustrates curious cases of amorous psycho-pathology in a coat-and-tie civilization, still very much alive in the mythological and ubiquitous city of Curitiba, where plastic flowers grow and red porcelain elephants may appear at any moment." - Joaquim Pedro de Andrade
Brazil in the mid-'70s. The economic miracle is only just beginning to sour, so confidence and optimism still pervade. The cinema is booming like never before, led by the box office bonanza of the porno-chanchada -- soft-core erotic comedies that celebrate the good life.
This is the background into which Conjugal Warfare was released. The film, based on short stories by Dalton Trevisan, focuses on three trails of romantic and sexual exploits: those of Osiris, a lawyer using his professional talents for seductive purposes; Nelsinho, who searches for the woman who will give him ultimate pleasure; and Joãozinho and Amalia, an elderly couple, each of whom hopes to get the last laugh at the other's expense. Cutting among the three stories, de Andrade brings the critical sensibility of Cinema Novo to the popular sex comedy, creating a searing portrait of a society in which sex has simply become a mask for power relations.

Cat Skin / Couro de gato
Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Brazil, 1960; 12m
Set to the rhythm of Rio's famous Carnaval, Cat Skin follows a group of slum kids who search for stray cats, hoping to turn their hides into drum heads. A brilliant short originally included in Five Times Favela, one of the seminal works in the transformation of Brazilian cinema.
