The Wild, Wild Rose / Yi mei gui zhi lian Series: Chinese Modern: A Tribute to Cathay Studios [45th NYFF Oct 10 - 16 2007] Director: Wong Tin-lam, Country: Hong Kong, Release: 1960, Runtime: 132 For many, the summit of the Hong Kong musical, The Wild, Wild Rose, stars Grace Chang at her most irrepressible. A kind of musical noir, the film is set in a nightclub that seems to contain the whole world while simultaneously being cut off from any known reality. Chang is Sijia, a torrid nightclub singer with an amazing range of styles and a penchant for seducing any man who comes close. Among her many victims is Hanhua (Chang Yang), a talented musician reduced to lounge lizard and ready to crack into pieces right before our eyes. Sijia's signature number is a slinky version (sung in Mandarin) of "La Habanera" from Bizet's Carmen, and that opera's searing blend of sex and death hangs over the action like the ever-present cigarette smoke that must have been a major portion of the design budget. Several of the songs lip-synched by the actors in Tsai Ming-liang's The Hole are from The Wild, Wild Rose, and Tsai has cited the film as a major influence.
