The epic Sun, Moon and Star takes its title from the three women who come to define the emotional life of Xu Jianbai (Chang Yang). Before the Sino-Japanese war, Jianbai falls in love with Zhu Lan (Lucilla You Min), but his parents object to the match, having long planned for him to marry his cousin Qiming (Grace Chang). Frustrated, Xu goes to study in the north where he meets Yanan (Julie Yeh Feng). When war breaks out, Yanan and Xu go off to join the army, Lan in the Nursing Corps, Qiuming as a singer entertaining the soldiers. The film traces their lives and fortunes both during the war and in its aftermath.
Chang Yang here is the perfect embodiment of one the principal Cathay male roles: the conflicted man, sophisticated in style yet indecisive, who eventually winds up hurting all those who dare to come close. Sun, Moon and Star was one of the era's super-productions - it cost over $200,000, the average cost of five Hong Kong films - but it was an enormous commercial and critical hit.
