“Mama Turns 100 is conceived as a very loose continuation of the earlier Ana and the Wolves. 15 years or so have passed since the end of the previous film; Ana is married and has brought her husband, Antonio, to the house to help celebrate the matriarch’s 100th birthday, for which a gala party is planned. Mama’s children are vexed by her longevity and would prefer to see her expire quickly so that they can get on with the business of the future…It first appears as if Saura has reached a certain loving accommodation with the family, but that impression will be dispelled by the film’s bittersweet ending.”—Marvin D’Lugo, The Films of Carlos Saura
