The climactic film in the Saura/Gades flamenco trilogy is set to the haunting music of Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. A 10-year-old girl is promised in marriage to a young boy, while a second boy—already in love with the girl—looks on helplessly. A decade later, the promised couple are preparing for their wedding day, while the other boy schemes on stopping the wedding and claiming what he feels is rightfully his.
Incorporating the original de Falla flamenco songs, sung by Rocío Jurado, Saura relies much more on the dance movements and the body language of the performers to tell his story, perhaps more confident in (and sensitive to) the ability to create narrative and evoke emotion simply through dance than in his earlier dance films.
