Hooligans Series: Commitment and Grace: The Films of Carlos Saura [Apr. 17 - May 3 2007] Director: Carlos Saura, Country: Spain, Release: 1960, Runtime: 88 Saura’s first feature film, Hooligans, marked a true watershed in Spanish cinema: both the high point of the small but influential Spanish neo-realist trend that had appeared in the 1950s, while simultaneously, with its vibrant handheld camera and complex storytelling, looking forward to the kind of cinema epitomized by the French New Wave. Using almost exclusively non-professional actors, the film follows the exploits of a group of young men living off petty crime while facing futures with little promise. One of their number, Juan, hopes to become a bullfighter, but the costs of entering the sport put that out of reach. So Ramón, erstwhile leader of the gang, plans a series of robberies to finance Juan’s novillada (debut) in the bullring. A recently established Spanish government film board offered Hooligans as Spain’s official entry at Cannes, where it was very well received. Then that same board gave the film the lowest possible subsidy rating, causing hardship for the producers as well as keeping the film out of Spanish movie theaters for several years.
