Flamenco Series: Commitment and Grace: The Films of Carlos Saura [Apr. 17 - May 3 2007] Director: Carlos Saura, Country: Spain, Release: 1995, Runtime: 100 “The idea was to make a documentary film with no storyline, no gimmicks, just to put together the best artists from the genre: contemporary artists and old-timers, the orthodox and the not-so-orthodox, classical flamenco and the flamenco of the future, different approaches, styles, combinations, etc. all had to be faithfully portrayed in our project.” ––Carlos Saura. Working for the first time with the great cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor), Saura creates a brilliant tapestry of color, sound and movement in this spectacular homage to the most famous of Spanish dances. Emphasizing the mixture of Gypsy, Arab, Jewish and Latin elements that is flamenco, both in song and dance, the film serves also as a celebration of a truly popular art form in an increasingly homogenous world.
