Blindfolded Eyes / Los ojos vendados Series: Commitment and Grace: The Films of Carlos Saura [Apr. 17 - May 3 2007] Director: Carlos Saura, Country: Spain, Release: 1978, Runtime: 110 In May 1977, Saura participated in the Bertrand Russell Tribunal on political torture in Latin America. The experience was deeply unsettling for him, not only because of the testimony he heard, but for the way in which the testimony was delivered: witnesses, in recounting their own horrible experiences, theatrically played the parts of victims. Afterward, interested in the social conventions that filter our memory of even our most intimate experiences, Saura and frequent collaborator Rafael Azcona devised the screenplay for Blindfolded Eyes. Luis, a theater director, witnesses the testimony of an Argentine torture victim and decides to mount a stageplay based on it. Meanwhile, his friend Manuel asks if his wife Emilia (Geraldine Chaplin) would take some acting classes; Luis agrees to take her on, and soon the two become lovers. Thinking that Emilia could be ideal in the role of the torture victim, Luis begins adapting the part for her—but then a series of threatening letters start to arrive, warning Luis to cancel his production. A provocative look at the challenges and pitfalls in making “political art.”
