Train Without a Timetable / Vlak bez voznog reda
Series: Beyond Boundaries: The Emergence of Croatian Cinema
Director: Veljko Bulajic, Country: Croatia, Release: 1959, Runtime: 123

In the spring of 1946—the first spring after the war—the new, Tito-led government organized huge resettlements of parts of Yugoslavia. In Bulajic’s well-loved film, set in the fictional village of Topolovo, this order to move has been met with stiff resistance on the part of some of the inhabitants. Through a combination of cajoling and force, the villagers load themselves onto a train and are sent off to the other side of the country. Along the way, long-simmering tensions emerge, exacerbated by the war and by their being uprooted. Train Without a Timetable follows several plots, ranging from love to revenge to continued resistance to the new government, as the villagers from Topolovo travel to and eventually re-settle in what for them will be a new world in several ways.
