The Melon Route / Put lubenica
Series: Beyond Boundaries: The Emergence of Croatian Cinema
Director: Branko Schmidt, Country: Croatia, Release: 2006, Runtime: 90

The melons referred to in the title of Branko Schmidt’s powerful film are illegal immigrants—people from Asia and Africa who pay traffickers in Croatia to smuggle them into western Europe. Combining elements from several newspaper stories, Schmidt and co-screenwriter Ognjen Svilicic (Armin) tell the story of a young Chinese girl who loses her father when the boat transporting them across a river capsizes. Alone in an alien culture where she speaks not a word of the language, she enters into a tenuous relationship with Mirko, a Croatian Army veteran and ex-drug addict who lost everything in the war and who now ekes out a living working for the smugglers. The Melon Route is an important, timely film that points out a growing humanitarian crisis in Croatia as well as in other parts of Europe.
