Combining elements from several newspaper stories, Schmidt and co-screenwriter Ognjen Svilicic (Armin) tell the story of a young Chinese girl who loses her father when the boat transporting them across a river capsizes. Alone in an alien culture where she speaks not a word of the language, she enters into a tenuous relationship with Mirko, a Croatian Army veteran and ex-drug addict who lost everything in the war and who now ekes out a living working for the smugglers. The Melon Route is an important, timely film that points out a growing humanitarian crisis in Croatia as well as in other parts of Europe.
