Like their cinematic colleagues around the world, Croatian filmmakers were quick to incorporate many of the stylistic and narrative innovations that defined the various New Waves of the explosive ‘60s. Perhaps no one exemplified this trend better than Vatroslav Mimica: His work consistently challenged both what could be said in the cinema and how. Monday or Tuesday details one day in the life of Marko, a Zagreb journalist. His thoughts about his ex-wife and present girlfriend meet with his fears about the worsening international situation to evoke memories of the wars and of those experiences during the war he’d rather keep buried. Mimica freely shifts point of view, changes film stocks and moves between staged sequences and spontaneous encounters, creating an extraordinarily vivid and not necessarily admirable impression of Marko and his world.
