Koncert Series: Beyond Boundaries: The Emergence of Croatian Cinema Director: Branko Belan, Country: Croatia, Release: 1954, Runtime: 97 Often rated by critics as the best Yugoslav film of the period, Koncert displays both the influence of prewar French Cinema––especially the tone and visual style of poetic realism––as well as Citizen Kane in its storytelling. The central focus of the film is a piano that serves as bellwether for the social and political changes in the first half of the 20th century. For one of its users, an emotionally and physically handicapped woman, the piano literally becomes her reason to live, despite what appears to be the hopelessness of her desire to own it. A beautifully realized work, with superb cinematography by Oktavijan Miletic, Koncert has a dark, almost existentialist sensibility strikingly different from the almost relentless optimism of other Yugoslav and Soviet bloc films of the era.
