Two young women, Iva (Olga Pakalovic) and Marija (Nina Violic), move into a seemingly quiet apartment building in Tresnjevka, a former working-class area of Zagreb. They’re lovers, and hope to live out their relationship in privacy. Little chance of that: The landlady’s son soon develops a crush on Iva, and when his attention is not reciprocated his mother suspects something must not be right. And as for their other neighbors...
A brave, unsettling work, Fine Dead Girls looks at intolerance of various kinds as it spread across contemporary Croatian society. The shock and disapproval of Iva and Maria’s relationship simply masks a host of other social problems and issues, from domestic violence to the psychological scars left from the war years. Bolstered by some wonderful performances, especially by Pakalovic and Violic as the ill-fated couple, Fine Dead Girls offers a revealing portrait of a society in transition.
