Series: Beyond Boundaries: The Emergence of Croatian Cinema
Director: Branko Bauer, Country: Croatia, Release: 1963, Runtime: 100

A key work in the emergence of a socially critical cinema in Yugoslavia, Branko Bauer’s Face to Face chronicles a contentious meeting of a workers’ council. One of the workers, Milun, is opposed the decisions of the factory’s director, Cumic, who years before had fought alongside Milun in the partisan struggles. Although he is supported by an anonymous letter detailing Cumic’s many mistakes, Milun finds few allies among his fellow workers, who, despite their feelings, are scared of the consequences of speaking out. Face to Face is a fascinating and remarkably candid look at the “on the ground” difficulties of trying to institute what became known as the Yugoslav experiment: “workers’ self-management,” a move away from central state planning of the economy (as existed in the USSR) towards more local control by the workers themselves. The film provoked widespread discussion and debate when first released.
