Give a Girl a Break
Series: All That Fosse
Director: Stanley Donen, Country: USA, Release: 1953, Runtime: 82

The heyday of the MGM musical is justifiably known for the big luxury items, the Band Wagons and On the Towns. But there were also many minor delights and this was one of them. Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Ann Miller were reportedly slated to appear in this showbiz story of a Broadway production whose star walks away in the middle of rehearsals and who needs to be replaced. When they were unavailable, the pedigree and the budget changed. The result is a minor delight, a wonderful melding of dream and reality. Twenty-one-year-old Debbie Reynolds, hot off the success of Singin’ in the Rain and I Love Melvin, is effervescent, and Marge and Gower Champion are always wonderful. But Fosse, 26 at the time, had a charming screen presence, and his numbers are standouts: small wonder, since he insisted on choreographing them himself. As a side note, Give a Girl a Break was beloved by Jean-Luc Godard, who put it on his ten-best list in 1960, the year it was released in Paris. Jacques Rivette is also a fan: the film is one of the inspirations for his own musical Up Down Fragile.
