Highlighting the vision for African unity that Bob Marley was devoted to
throughout his music
career, the "Africa Unite" concert was performed in front of more than
350,000 people
gathered in the historic Meskel Square of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to
celebrate what would
have been his 60th birthday. The 12-hour concert, featuring a host of
internationally
acclaimed artists, is interwoven throughout this film, illuminating the
global influence of a
man who defined his own aim as "spreading the message of unity and equality,
to end the
needless suffering of mankind."
Africa Unite also focuses on the UNICEF-sponsored symposia and
youth-oriented workshops
that were held during the week-long celebration. Taking their inspiration
from such Bob
Marley songs as War and Get Up Stand Up, these sessions deal with issues
that include
conflict transformation, youth and womens empowerment, prevention of
corruption and
awareness and treatment of HIV/AIDS and other major diseases, and the
centrality of human
rights.
Starring Rita Marley, Danny Glover, Angélique Kidjo, Lauryn Hill and
Marley's children Ziggy,
Cedella, Sharon, Stephen, Kymani, Julian and Damian.
Preview screening of a work-in-progress.
With special guests (discussion and performance)
Danny Glover
Rita Marley
Dudley Thompson
Kymani Marley
and the
Ethiopian World Federation Drummers
