Big Night
Campbell Scott & Stanley Tucci, U.S., 1996; 107m
During the 1950s in the seaside resort of Keyport, New Jersey, two immigrant brothers -- master chef, Primo Pilaggi (Tony Shalhoub) and his maitre d' brother, Secondo (Stanley Tucci) -- open an authentic Italian restaurant called the Paradise. Not surprisingly, there's trouble in Paradise ~ financial trouble. Pascal (Ian Holm), the owner of an enormously successful restaurant across the street offers to get his friend the big-time musician Louis Prima to be their guest. The brothers plan a mouth-watering celebration ~ a big night that will make or break them. The magnificent parade of dishes is matched by the delicious writing, directing and acting. The wonderful cast of characters includes Pascal's mistress, the sensuous Gabriella (Isabella Rossellini); Secondo's earthy, charming girlfriend, Phyllis (Minnie Driver); Primo's would-be flame, Ann (Allison Janney); and a car salesman (Campbell Scott) who's always ready with a pitch.
