The Women’s Film Preservation Fund
Sensations in Sound: A Suite of “Music Films”

Mon Nov 20: 6:30

The Women's Film Preservation Fund is the premier effort of women in the industry to preserve our cultural legacy. Established in 1995 by New York Women in Film and Television, WFPF is committed to the preservation of American films in which women have had a significant role. Sensations in Sound: A Suite of “Music Films” is a program of films preserved by the Women’s Film Preservation Fund that uniquely blend music and image.

The program will be introduced by editor Thelma Schoonmaker and film historian Antonia Lant. Filmmakers Greta Schiller and Andrea Weiss will be present.

Tarantella (1940)
Imagination (1948)
New Sensations in Sound (1949)
Mary Ellen Bute; 9m
Pioneering filmmaker Mary Ellen Bute influenced generations, first in the creation of abstract animation of the 30s and second with her inventive experimentation with electronic imagery in the 50s. Tarantella imagines a piano composition for dance; Imagination, produced by the Steve Allen Show, interprets a King Sisters song; New Sensations in Sound was created for RCA Victor.

Meditation on Violence
Maya Deren, 1948; 13m
Maya Deren, the “Godmother” of American avant-garde cinema, made Meditation on Violence decades ahead of today’s fascination with martial arts. This beautiful display of a man practicing the movements of traditional Shao Lin and Wu Tang Chinese boxing is paired with a meticulously restored soundtrack of flutes and Haitian drumming.

Coney
Caroline Ahlfors Mouris & Frank Mouris, 1975; 5m
Coney is a quick, pixilated tour of New York's infamous amusement park. Screened at the 1975 New York Film Festival, it is a unique early example of an "animated" documentary, featuring a wild experimental soundtrack.

International Sweethearts of Rhythm
Greta Schiller and Andrea Weiss, 1986; 28m
This internationally acclaimed documentary about the swinging eponymous 40s multiracial all-women jazz band features a 16-piece orchestra with a strong brass section, heavy percussion, a deep rhythmic sense and many of the best female musicians of the day. The restored Sweethearts returns to Lincoln Center where it debuted 20 years ago in the 1986 New York Film Festival!
