A most assured debut feature, The Night of the Sunflowers is another fine example of a contemporary Spanish film that calls on the resources of classic film genre to create something fresh and distinctive. While waiting to meet up with her husband in an isolated, backwoods area, Gabi (Judith Diakhate) is attacked and left for dead; she’s later discovered by her husband, Esteban (Carmelo Gómez) and his assistant Pedro, scientists who have come to the area to investigate the discovery of a new cave. The two men go off looking for the culprit, and head to a nearby, nearly abandoned town; there, Gabi accuses one of the locals — but has serious doubts about the man’s guilt.
Director Sánchez-Cabezudo, who also wrote the screenplay, divides the film into six chapters, with a different character as the focus of each; motivations and circumstances take on different meanings with the consistently shifting points-of-view. The atmosphere of fear, suspicion and guilt stands in sharp counterpoint to the innocence of the rural settings.
