Sholay

September 1 – 5

Ramesh Sippy, India, 1975; 200m (plus intermission)

With: Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malina, Jaya Bhaduri, Amjad Khan

If any film says "Bollywood," it's Sholay; long unavailable, Sholay finally returns to the big screen where it so truly belongs. There's an extraordinary and utterly seamless blend of adventure, comedy, music and dance numbers and thrilling action sequences, a perfect masala of flavors and rhythms that makes Sholay one of Indian cinema's indisputable classics. When first released, Sholay ran for five years in theaters in Bombay (Mumbai) and New Delhi, and was acclaimed by millions around the world. After all the so-called Bollywood homages and pastiches in recent years, come discover the artistry and sheer pleasure of the real thing.

Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan (just before he attained superstar status) are Veeru and Jai, two ne'er-do-wells who get recruited by retired police officer Sanjeev Kumar to defend a small town from some marauding bandits who are camped out in the surrounding mountains. Hesitant at first to go over to the side of the law, Veeru and Jai become convinced when they discover that among the town's charms are Hema Malina and Jaya Bhaduri (who would subsequently become Mrs. Bachchan). As the leader of the threatening bandits, Amjad Singh gives simply one of the greatest bad guy performances in movie history.
