In the early years of the Chinese Republic, two stage performers, Hai-tang and his female partner Hsiang-chi, enjoy success and a loving relationship. One night, they perform before military warlord Yuan Pao-fan; he’s immediately struck by Hsiang-chi’s beauty; when she rebuffs his advances, he orders the arrest of Hai-tang. To rescue him, Hsiang-chi agrees to become Yuan’s mistress. Yet when Hsiang-chi becomes pregnant, it becomes clear that she and Hsiang-chi must do whatever they can to escape. Director Lo Chen brings the tumultuous, lawless period of the early Republic to vibrant life, creating the sense of a society in which all the old rules and conventions no longer have any meaning.
