Based on a folktale often adapted for operas, the film begins as Ying-tai, a headstrong young woman, tries to convince her parents to allow her to go to school — a privilege reserved for men in fourth-century China. Dressing as a man, she’s able to fool even her parents, and thus gets their consent for her studies. Arguably the Shaws’ most successful production, it used the traditional opera conceit of having women in men’s roles. Actress Betty Loh-ti as Ying-tai is a woman pretending to be a man (but who’s really a woman), while actress Ivy Ling Po as Shan-po plays a man (who in the film really is a man), a bit of gender bending that only adds to the film’s charm.
