Scanners: The 2006 New York Video Festival July 26 – 30
A co-presentation of the Film Society and Lincoln Center Festival 2006
2006 marks the fifteenth time the Film Society has celebrated what’s new in new media. The name may have changed (more than once), but that’s because the media itself is ever-changing and evolving. This year we’re presenting interactive work as performance, as well as a computer-created couple who will answer your questions live and in real time! Lots of live music is on tap in two different programs, but no rock concert here; we’ve got great collaborations between musicians and media artists. Don’t forget to turn on your cell phones when we present new works revolving around those tiny communicators. And watch for animation in multiple programs and in various styles, from new anime to a look at the work of animator extraordinaire John Canemaker. Of course it wouldn’t be summer if Armond White wasn’t taking the stage — this year he’ll riff on the hype surrounding Hype Williams and his music videos. Throughout these five days, you will be seeing many faces familiar to our audiences (George Kuchar, Tom Kalin, Diane Nerwen, Torsten Zenas Burns, Donigan Cumming, Shannon Plumb, and more), others with long resumes but new to the Scanners stage, as well as a bunch of newbies whom we invite to make themselves at home. This year’s festival is dedicated to Nam June Paik. Artist, visionary, father to us all. We are poorer without him, but since virtually everyone in this exploding field has been touched by his genius, we celebrate him as we celebrate the work of his heirs.

Peter Angelo Simon’s photography-based digital artworks break new ground. Neither photographs nor paintings, they occupy a frontier place in contemporary art. Richly colored and alive with dynamic movement these works dissolve boundaries, exploring new techniques and aesthetics.
